The Pack, and much of the fan base, came out of Tuesday’s overtime loss to Georgia Tech with a bad taste in their mouth. No Markell, (still) no Funderburk, then no more Dereon Seabron for the rest of the season due to an academic redshirt leaves the once deep bench for State now struggling to keep guys on the court. I for one, was not quick to press the panic button like others were. The main reason being State has a five game stretch where they play lower level competition to get things back on track. It started today with a 84-65 win against Detroit Mercy.
The game against Detroit was the first game for the Titans and it showed, except for Antoine Davis, the nation’s returning leading scorer. He picked up where he left off from last year scoring 28 points today on 11-23 from the field with 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Mike Davis, the former Indiana Head Coach, is at the helm for his second year and ran a lot of 1-3-1 zone practically daring the Pack to shoot them out of it. And the Captain, Braxton Beverly did just that.
Beverly led Wolfpack scorers with a career high 23 points, shooting 6-8 from 3 point land, adding 3 assists and 2 rebounds. CJ Bryce added 19 points and Devon Daniels came off the bench with 14. The biggest bright spot of the day was seeing Markell Johnson back on the court after sitting out the first game with an ankle injury. His scoring struggled today but it was not necessary as he added 10 assists and 7 rebounds, both leading the team. Manny Bates continues to reign terror down low, recording 7 blocks. It maybe a little early for this, but there is a good chance Bates gives Beejay Anya’s school record for blocks a run for its money.
Few QuicK Thoughts:
- AJ Taylor, who did not play much against Georgia Tech and sat on the bench with a pad on his knee, was in street clothes. Keatts said in the postgame presser Taylor was going through some “personal things” so it does feel good that it is not an injury
- Walk-ons Max Farthing and Chase Graham got to play a few minutes and got a few open looks with neither one connecting on their shots. I fully expect one of them to make Chimp’s #Up20Down20 teams soon
- A slack crowd to start in the PNC, but eventually the crowd started to trickle in and was respectable for a 4:00 o’clock tip on a Sunday, especially less than 24 hours before, next door the football team was getting boat-raced on national television by Clemson
- Overall, a solid bounce back win for the Pack and fully expect them to continue this kind of play to regain confidence and prepare for the tough non-conference stretch that awaits them around Thanksgiving
