ACC Recruiting: Pitt and VPI add, FSU recruit decommits

Front court depth coming for Panthers and Hokies, ‘Noles lose four star

It’s been a bit slow lately, most teams in the league have rounded out their rosters. Virginia Tech however, still has work to do.

On May 28th Hokies new head coach Mike Young was able to reel in a Branden Johnson from the graduate transfer market, giving him, at the very least, a body for practice. Johnson, a 6’8 traditional power forward, comes from Alabama State of the SWAC conference. He averaged 4.3 points and 3.7 rebounds last year.

The addition of Johnson brings VPI’s currently scholarship athlete count to nine, almost enough to hold a scrimmage. Four on four isn’t that much different, right?

Jeff Capel has also added to his front court in Pittsburgh, receiving a commitment from UNC-G big man Eric Hamilton. Hamilton committed during his visit to Pitt this week. Hamilton averaged 6.1 points and 4.4 rebounds in his lone season in Greensboro. He began his college career at Wichita State as a member of the 2015 recruiting cycle. I would expect that he will back up Terrell Brown for the upcoming season. I see that as definite bench upgrade for the Panthers.

In probably the biggest recruiting news in the ACC this week, four star guard Naseem Khalid has de-committed from Leonard Hamilton’s Florida State program. The 6’2 guard had been committed to FSU since October of 2017. He is currently ranked as the #65 recruit in the country in the 2020 class.
