Duke recruiting is just fine

By Mychal Hunter

We were all jealously hopeful weren’t we? Similarly to the way we are fooled by our teams who play a cupcake schedule and win by 40 points a night the first two weeks. You wanna believe your team is that good. In this case, you wanted to believe that Duke recruiting was dead with the defection of Pittsburgh head coach Jeff Capel.

Sorry to say folks, it’s not. In fact, it is alive and well.

Today, as most of you probably already know, Vernon Carey Jr., announced his commitment to play in Durham next season.

I said on yesterday’s podcast that regardless of a ton of people thinking Michigan State was the destination, it just felt like Duke all the way. Carey is currently ranked as the #4 player in the 2019 class by 247 sports.

The bulky, 6’10 275 pound banger is a high energy, high effort player on both ends of the floor. He will bring an ability to rebound the ball similar to Wendell Carter Jr. did in the 2016-17 season. Though, I am not sure he has the range Carter possessed on offense.

As you can see from the video, he has some handle. He has the ability to finish with both hands. What sticks out to me is his body. He is college basketball ready right now. Big shoulder, built for physical play. A player who can post up and go back to the basket or face up.

He joins five star recruits wing Wendell Moore (#28) and Boogie Ellis (#26) in the 2019 recruiting haul for Coach K. It may not be the typical class that Duke fans are accustomed to, but those fans can pound sand. Any fan base that isn’t happy with a trio of five star guys is ridiculous.
