ACC’s Top Returning Players: #17 M.J. Walker

By Mychal Hunter

Florida State makes it first appearance on the returning players list. Coming in at #17 is former five star recruit and soon to be star, swing man M.J. Walker.

If you are a box score impostor who never watches actual games this is one that you may have missed last season. Walker averaged a modest 7 points, 2 rebounds and an assist per game overall as a frosh, but I assure you, the talent is there.

As shown in the video above, Walker is a big bodied guard who can score it at all three levels. One of the few five star players in the 2017 class that was projected to be a multi-year player, Walker figures to be a shining star for the Seminoles in 2018-19

Last year, Leonard Hamilton’s group was a “sum its parts” team more than a star driven squad. In 35 games Florida State had 8 different leading scorers. The ‘Noles had seven players average 7 points per game or more. Walker scored double figures in 10 games last season. In those games the Seminoles went 8-2.

Hamilton will need to replace CJ Walker (8 ppg) and Braian Angola (12.5 ppg) on the wing and given that FSU has been in the top 60 in points scored per game each of the past three years, Walker seems in line for a big break out season.

Also of note, due to a lack of attenuation, FSU didn’t have a ton of space for its incoming 2018 class. This team is basically the same as last year so it could be safe to assume that they will be even more effective on offense.

All of this leads to Walker receiving an opportunity to excel. When you combine talent with opportunity the results are typically favorable. Look for Walker to be on an All-ACC team at the end of the season.
